"It's Snowing" experimental landscape painting by Texas artist Linda Bein

"It's Snowing!"
Experimental
11"x14"
$125
To purchase contact Linda at lindaabein@gmail.com

This painting was done as a demo during an adult art class.  I have several done in a similar process.  You take an old painting you don't like (never waste a piece of 140#  arches watercolor paper) or on a new sheet.  I used an old painting and collaged  tissue paper on it using gesso to mute the background colors.  After it is dry you look at the painting, turn it around a few times and start painting, reacting to the colors and texture that you have created.  You go with the flow and find inspiration from the painting in process or you can force it to a specific subject matter.  I usually feel a landscape emerging.  I do not normally paint out in the heat or the cold, but I love to be outside; maybe that is why I enjoy painting landscapes.  The most relaxing part of my day is outside in the morning and night with the dog feeding the horses, and of course scooping all that manure!!

I do miss the snow; it is pretty as it gently lands on the bare tree branches and  floats  to the ground.  But it is not usually that serene more like the wind whips up and you have white outs and driving is impossible and the snow drifts cover your door and the drive needs to be shoveled and I shouldn't forget the negative wind chills!!!! Gives me the chills just remembering those days up north!!! But it is pretty!

"Silent Night" watercolor by Texas artist Linda Bein

"Silent Night"
transparent watercolor
22"x15"
$215

There is something peaceful and restful in the new fallen snow.  It is so quiet, a good time to reflect on all those blessings that you are thankful for. It seemed an appropriate time of the year for  "Silent Night"; it was done as a monochromatic demo.  Next time I may put in an evergreen tree (of course it will be blue) and one big bright star in the sky.  I have also thought of  putting footprints in the foreground, disappearing as they go off into the night.  It is a good lesson in glazing layer upon layer of color.

"Frosty Reflections" watermedia painting by Texas artist Linda Bein

"Frosty Reflections"
11"x15"
water media
$125
"Frosty Reflections" was done as a demo in an adult art class.  I have a similar larger painting hanging in my studio that they wanted to paint.  We work on fundamentals each week and once a month choose a piece that is more abstract. We go with the flow, each one is always different, that's what makes it interesting.

It is cool and crisp today, love the fall weather.  It is a great time to paint changing colors of the leaves.  This painting was done as a class demo.  We started with and under-painting, did negative painting, and then painted on the leaves.  And we ended with dry brushing and splattering.

I just finished my outside horse chores and walking the dog.  I actually needed gloves and my carhart jacket, not to mention warm socks.  Oh, I don't think I would survive a New York winter after being in Texas for almost 20 years!!!  I do miss these autumn colors, I am working on several  paintings inspired by the breath taking colors of  autumn in western New York.

"Bucket of Apples" transparent watercolor by Texas artist Linda Bein

"Bucket of Apples"
transparent watercolor
22"x15"
$375
Fall is the perfect time for apple picking.  We would  pick a bushel or two every fall when we lived in New York State, the orchard was less than a mile from our house.   The kids enjoyed the wagon ride, eating an apple and picking more. Of course the donuts and cider were a big hit too. And they couldn't wait for all the  baked goods we made, cakes, pies, breads, applesauce, donuts.  I can smell the yummy apple cinnamon aroma wafting from the kitchen now.

This watercolor brings back the memories of the fall in in western New York State.  We would ride the wagon and pick apples in the apple orchards and have cider and donuts after our work was done.  Then we would go home and my daughters would help make apple muffins, bread, and pies, and of course their favorite, homemade applesauce.   We would pick out our pumpkins in the pumpkin patches   There were always stands selling gourds and squash.  Some of those squash were 15" long and 4-5 inches in diameter. They make the best chocolate zucchini bread.  I will say that the squash in Texas is small, I thought everything was bigger in Texas????  whats up with that?  Probably not enough rain!!!!

"Sunrise Majesty" contemporary equine watercolor painting by Texas artist , Linda Bein

"Sunrise Majesty"
watercolor
22"x30"
$1395
To inquire contact Linda at Lindaabein@gmail.com.
This watercolor painting was started on 140 pound arches cold press paper using winsor newton transparent watercolor and saran wrap.  You place the saran wrap on wet paint and it leaves spaces and lines.  After it is dry you look at it and wonder, "what on earth have I done this time?"  It doesn't look like anything.  After turning it around and looking at it several days or weeks you imagine something on the paper.  This turned out to be a horse.  I could not decide what to name this work so I asked my students.  I combined their suggestions of sunrise and majestic.

"Coconuts"

"Coconuts"
watercolor on yuppo paper
24"x26"
$695
"Coconuts" was created on yuppo paper, it is more like plastic than paper, an acrylic sheeting with transparent watercolor.  The background sand or water was lightly brushed on, watercolor paint out of the tube was then mixed with water and squirted on with a nozzle bottle for the trunk.  The palm fronds were painted on with a paint brush and lifted off with the brush.  You can wipe it back to white paper unless you are using a staining pigment. The paint slides on and off the yuppo paper like a child on a slide.

"Fall Colors"
Transparent Watercolor
22"x30"
$1295
I love to splash paint on the paper and spray it with water and let it run.  It is also fun to lay another paper on top of that and make a print as I did here.  But then you have to make both paintings come together.  Since I love trees, hills, foliage, and the outdoors these type of paintings become abstract landscapes.  The other painting is still a work in progress!   If you are interested in this painting or others contact Linda at lindaabein@gmail.com

This painting was started years ago and re-created one day.  It is a mixed media painting but is more like an experimental painting.  It started as a watercolor, then I covered it with gesso and sprayed it with water.  I also put some acrylic paint on it and sprayed again.  I began to see flowers emerge.  Then I began to paint with watercolor again and also some pearl paint.  I used acrylic paint in a squeeze bottle for the flowers.

"Running Free" watercolor by Texas Artist Linda Bein

"Running Free"

These horses are running free, I'd like to join them and forget all the responsibilities in life.
I have not blogged in weeks. I have been painting all summer but with teaching art classes and  summer camps everyday, moving kids to and from college, to out of state summer jobs, moving kids to their own houses, setting up and  teaching fall classes, plus the horses, cats, dogs, yard work, house work, this list is endless, I flake out before I take the photos to blog.  Of course then you have to crop and upload.  It seems there is always one more thing to do.  Oh, rearrange and paint after the kids move out.  The list just goes on. I know that we are all too busy these days and need to take time for the important things in life. I did this summer, but now that the kids are off,  I am turning over a new leaf, making time for photos and blogging.  Of course my kids are laughing because I am always turning over a new leaf, it usually relates to losing weight or working out; I just finished a bowl of ice cream.  Hopefully I will do better at blogging than dieting. At least I have made the time to paint, that's the passion. Take time to enjoy your loved ones.

"Black Beauty" charcoal by Texas fine artist Linda Bein

"Black Beauty"
charcoal
12"x18"
This was a class demo using charcoal that I didn't post.  Hard for some of my students to visualize in just one color while looking at a real life photo.  Just a little exercise of seeing the value in one color.  I have used this photograph for several demonstrations; I need to get out and take some new photos but it is too hot!!  Soon my fall classes will resume and we will start with drawing and shading and move on to monochromatic watercolor paintings.  I usually save the charcoal for the end but I think we will start with the charcoal instead of pencil, even though I will probably have to wash the walls when we are done.

"Blizzard" by Texas Fine Artist Linda Bein

"Blizzard"
15"x22"
I was just thinking of cooler weather and my childhood home.  In the winter the blizzard winds create white-outs.  One second you can see bits and pieces of the landscape; the next you see nothing.  I love the tall pines in the north.  "Blizzard" combines the trees and the snow....wishfull thinking since it was 113 at my pool yesterday, now it says 116!!!!

After I painted this painting I left it on my easel to decide if I was done.  I usually leave a painting around a few days or weeks to decide if I am finished or want to "tweak" it a little more.  My students came in and they always look around to see whats new.  One of the girls  just loved the painting of the  peaches because they looked so fuzzy.  She was just smiling and happy when she looked at the painting.  It is always fun for me to see their expressions and hear their comments.

"Iris Ballet" water color by TexasFine Artist Linda Bein

"Iris Ballet"
transparent watercolor
22"x15"
$495
This painting was started months, maybe years ago.  Last week I made a decision to finish the stacks of paintings in my studio, closets, and framing room.  I bring one out set in on my easel, and look at it for awhile.  I am always interested in my students' reactions to my work. This one had many responses. Some liked the flowers, others said angels and several saw ballerinas. I decided to finish it into Irises, but the ballerinas still received comments, hence the name Iris Ballet.  What do you see?

If you have ever tried to skate on a pond or lake, its not easy, that smooth as glass look doesn't exist everywhere.  Those frozen  ripples from the wind and the waves can send you sprawling on the cold hard ice. But it still looks pretty when you are inside drinking hot chocolate by the fireplace.

"Turner Falls" Acrylic on Canvas by Linda Bein

"Turner Falls"
Acrylic
30"x40"
Commissioned
My youngest daughter and I went camping at Turner Falls with her friend and her mom over Labor Day weekend several years ago.  The kids took photos to remember their 17th birthday, but we will never forget it!!  As soon as we reached the driveway and pulled in the garage my daughter was sick.  We went to an emergency clinic and she ended up in the hospital overnight with a gastro-intestinal virus. It was horrible, at first they thought it was a bacterial infection maybe from the water/falls. Finally the drugs stopped the sickness but by then she was extremely dehydrated.   It was difficult to work on painting that brought back those memories of watching your child be so sick and not being able to do anything.  It also makes you thankful that as sick as she was, it was just a virus and not anything worse.  The painting was for my oldest daughter who has fond memories of a trip to Turner Falls!!  She and her husband are very happy when they look at the painting but I remember my youngest daughter's pain. I am glad it is done and they are happy!
